Ess-a-Bagel Introduce
In a city defined by its culinary icons, few names carry the same weight as Ess-a-Bagel. Established in 1976 by Florence and Gene Wilpon along with Aaron Wenzelberg, this family-owned institution has spent nearly half a century perfecting the art of the New York bagel. Originally starting on 1st Avenue, the "Ess-a" name (a play on the Yiddish word for "to eat") quickly became synonymous with the gold standard of baking. By 1993, the demand for their signature chewy, crusty creations led to the opening of their flagship Midtown location at 831 3rd Avenue. Today, Ess-a-Bagel is more than just a shop; it is a cultural landmark where the line out the door is a testament to a recipe that has remained largely unchanged for decades, fueled by an Austrian baking heritage and a famously generous approach to toppings.
The atmosphere at the 3rd Avenue shop is pure, unadulterated New York. It is a high-energy environment where the scent of malt and yeast hits you the moment you cross the threshold. While the shop is a favorite for tourists checking a "must-eat" item off their lists, it remains a vital daily ritual for Midtown office workers and neighborhood residents. The staff is legendary for their efficiency, moving through long queues with a practiced speed that ensures your bagel is in your hands while it is still fresh. Whether you are a local who knows your order by heart or a first-timer marveling at the sheer size of the "massive" bagels, Ess-a-Bagel offers an experience that feels both historic and vibrantly alive.
Location and Accessibility
Ess-a-Bagel is conveniently located at 831 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10022, USA, positioned between East 50th and East 51st Streets. This central Midtown East location makes it incredibly accessible for those navigating the heart of Manhattan. It is situated just a few blocks from major corporate headquarters and is within easy walking distance of landmark locations like St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Rockefeller Center. The shop’s proximity to transit hubs makes it a perfect first stop for anyone arriving in the city early in the morning.
Accessibility via public transportation is excellent. The shop is just a short walk from the Lexington Av/51 St subway station, served by the 6, E, and M trains. Additionally, numerous north-south bus lines run along 3rd and Lexington Avenues, providing easy access from both the Upper East Side and Murray Hill. While the interior dining area is famously limited, the shop features a few coveted window seats and small tables in the back. For those on a tight schedule, the shop is well-equipped for "grab-and-go" service, and the line—while often stretching toward the door—is managed by a "kind and quick" team that ensures the wait is never as long as it looks.

Features and Highlights
What sets Ess-a-Bagel apart in a city filled with bagel shops is a combination of tradition, scale, and specific culinary features:
- Massive Portions: Their bagels are famous for being "massive" and "enormous," providing a much larger serving than the average neighborhood shop.
- Hand-Rolled Tradition: Every bagel is cut and rolled by hand, maintaining the irregular, artisanal texture that machine-made bagels lack.
- Kosher Certification: The bagels are Tablet K Certified, making them a reliable choice for the city's observant community.
- Legendary Line Flow: Despite being "busy as heck," the shop is a well-oiled machine where the line moves fast, often taking less time than expected even at 8:30 AM.
- Nationwide Acclaim: Consistently voted among the top bagel spots in NYC by major publications and local food guides.
- Tofu Variety: For vegan or dairy-free diners, they offer one of the most extensive selections of tofu-based spreads in the city.
- Freshness: Bagels are produced in small batches throughout the day, ensuring they remain "warm and soft" for each customer.

What is worth choosing
If you are looking for the definitive Ess-a-Bagel experience, the "Signature Favorite" is the absolute must-try. This sandwich features a hand-rolled bagel of your choice (Everything or Sesame are local favorites) loaded with sliced Nova lox, scallion cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, and capers. It is a masterclass in the balance of salty, creamy, and fresh flavors. For those who prefer a warm breakfast, the turkey, egg, and cheese on a warm bagel is highly recommended; it is noted for being "well-seasoned" and comes with generous turkey slices that provide a hearty start to the day.
Beyond the sandwiches, the "Baker's Dozen" (which includes 13 bagels) is the best value for families or those looking to stock their freezer. Local regulars often suggest getting the bagels "unsliced" to maintain their freshness longer. For those with a sweet tooth, the variety of cream cheeses—such as strawberry, blueberry, or the colorful funfetti—pair beautifully with their cinnamon raisin bagels. Don't forget to grab a few of their mini black and white cookies on your way out; they are a classic New York treat that perfectly complements the savory main course. Whether you're eating in a window seat on 3rd Avenue or reheating a shipped order in an air fryer at home, choosing Ess-a-Bagel means choosing a piece of New York's culinary soul.

Probably one of the best breakfast bagels I’ve tried! • Ess-a-Bagel did not disappoint. I got a warm bagel with creamy cheese, nicely cooked eggs, and generous turkey slices. • Well-seasoned overall, though I love a lot of pepper, so I added extra to mine, and ketchup too. • Staff were kind and quick to take and serve orders. • Went around 8:30 AM on a Thursday. There was a line, but it moved fast. • They also have a great variety of pastries. • Limited dining area, but I managed to grab a window seat. • Will definitely be back to try more!

I live in the middle of nowhere. Closest grocery store is 30 mins. Closest really good grocery store is over an hour. I love bagels and have been lucky enough to travel to NYC and I have sampled some of the bagel greats. And yes there are none better than NYC. I sent some of these bagels to my relatives for Christmas and I liked them so much I ordered some for me. 5-6 mins in Air Fryer and you are ready. Is it as good as in person? No. Is it really good ...yes!!! I am lucky to have found these. Oh yeah these bagels are not only great they are massive!

Be best breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had. The line was quite long, we waited about 15 minutes to order, and we got our order in five minutes. They have a great system functioning, but it’s definitely a lot of people inside the café. We got two morning classics with bacon, egg, and cheese, and a poppyseed bagel with apple cinnamon cream cheese, which was incredible. Definitely be prepared to wait in line, we were lucky that there was no line outside the door, but it got busy very very fast. There’s very limited seating, but I’m sure if you wait around and ask people when they’re leaving, you’ll find some seating. We also got a cappuccino and it was really good.

We have walked by this place many times over the past few years and there is always a very long line of customers every weekend day. So recently we decided to try it out just after lunch when there was no line. We ordered a bagel with scallion cream cheese and an americano coffee. The coffee was quite good. The bagel on the other hand did not taste any worse or better than bagels we eat all over the city. I am assuming this place was written up and promoted on social media which attracts the crowds. Nothing special here for us.

Very decent bagels but Everytime I ask them to not toast my bagel they do it anyways. This morning I asked the gentleman nicely behind the counter to not toast the bagel. I watched him put it inside the toaster and I asked him about it and he said it just came out of the oven. Okay priced but extremely annoyed of this happening multiple times and their workers lying.
