Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the vibrant heart of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery has established itself as a colorful and essential destination for anyone with a serious sweet tooth. Since its inception, this bakery has avoided the minimalist trends of modern cafes, opting instead for a warm, retro-inspired atmosphere that feels like a cozy kitchen away from home. Now located within the historic and newly revitalized Essex Market at 88 Essex St, Sugar Sweet Sunshine continues to serve its legendary array of puddings, cupcakes, and cookies to a loyal following of New Yorkers and visitors alike. It is a place that celebrates the simple, unadulterated joy of American baking, providing a whimsical retreat from the fast-paced energy of the city.
While many bakeries in the city compete for the most avant-garde creations, Sugar Sweet Sunshine sticks to what it does best: consistent, flavor-forward comfort food. The bakery is particularly famous for its unique take on pudding—a category it has mastered and expanded far beyond the traditional banana varieties found elsewhere. For those who live or work in the 10002 zip code, it is a reliable spot for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up or a celebration cake that tastes as good as it looks. The brand’s identity is built on a "sunshine-filled" philosophy, aiming to brighten every customer's day with high-quality ingredients and a friendly, down-to-earth service style that reflects the eclectic spirit of the neighborhood.
Stepping up to their counter inside Essex Market, you are immediately greeted by a kaleidoscope of frosting colors and the sweet aroma of fresh-baked cake. It is a sensory experience that invites nostalgia, reminding patrons of classic childhood treats but elevated with professional technique. Despite the evolution of the neighborhood, Sugar Sweet Sunshine remains a steadfast pillar of the local food scene, proving that well-made pudding and moist cupcakes never go out of style.

What is worth choosing
If you are visiting Sugar Sweet Sunshine for the first time, your primary focus should undoubtedly be the pudding. While many long-time fans have their favorites, it is highly recommended to explore their more unique combinations. The "Chocolate Chip Deliciousness" is a perennial favorite for those who love a classic, comforting texture, while the "Strawberry Lemon Trifle" offers a bright, refreshing alternative that provides a nice balance to the richer offerings. If you are feeling adventurous, the "Sexy Red Velvet Puddin" is a standout signature that captures the essence of the bakery’s most popular cake flavor in a creamy, spoonable format.
Because the bakery allows for two samples, it is wise to "choose wisely" and try the flavors you are most curious about before committing to a container. A 6 oz container with two flavors is an excellent way to sample the variety. Beyond the pudding, the cupcakes are a staple that should not be overlooked. They are known for their moist crumb and flavorful frosting, making them a perfect companion for a cold New York afternoon. However, a helpful local tip is to always double-check your bag before leaving the counter—especially during high-volume times or inclement weather—to ensure your full order, including any extra cupcakes or treats, is accounted for. While there is a small fee for additional spoons (one is provided free with your purchase), the quality of the dessert makes it a worthy investment. Whether you are treating yourself to a "Chocolate Bomb" or picking up a cake for a cozy night in, Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery at 88 Essex St remains a delightful and reliable choice for authentic Lower East Side sweets.
In conclusion, Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery continues to be a vibrant part of the New York dessert landscape. Its move to Essex Market has only increased its accessibility, allowing more people to discover why its puddings and cakes have been a local obsession for years. By focusing on flavor, variety, and a cheerful atmosphere, it remains a "breath of fresh air" for those seeking a true taste of Manhattan’s artisanal baking culture.

Pudding was fine but not worth the price (compared to something like Magnolia). Infuriatingly, this last time I had trekked out in a whole blizzard to get cake for the cold night in and was charged for a cupcake that the girl didn’t even put in my bag. The cake was the only reason I went and I didn’t see that it was missing from the rest of the order until I got home (I’m obviously not going BACK out in the blizzard and they would have been closed by the time I got there anyway). So I also overpaid for a cupcake I didn’t even get to eat. Extremely frustrating given the conditions. Should’ve just gone to Magnolia in the first place.

I've been craving the pudding from Sugar Sweet Sunshine since the last time I had it (probably back in 2018?) and recently came across their other location in Essex Market in LES. It was still good but not as good as I remembered. I got a 6 oz container with 2 flavors (chocolate chip deliciousness and strawberry lemon trifle) upon the recommendation of the woman behind the counter. They only allow 2 samples so choose wisely! The two I had tried (Sexy Red Velvet Puddin and chocolate bomb) were a bit underwhelming so I felt like I was going in a bit blind. They also charge extra for spoons (you get one free but each additional one is $0.25). Overall was a bit disappointed by the visit this time around.

Rude owner and employees. Peggy, it is not particularly significant to me whether you "take me seriously" or not. Again, I have already mapped out my responses to you from my experiences in the past when I have visited your shop in person and over social media in recent weeks, which should be displayed publicly for all to see. Both examples have been displays of rude, unwarranted behavior that is unfit for any proprietor and there is no reason for this. It truly points to some lack of interpersonal intelligence to be absolutely blunt. To reiterate, I honestly feel the disregard and lack of respect is a product of soaking up the more blatant cultural decorum of the surrounding city (albeit my being a New Yorker myself of 30-something years) but it speaks volumes of how flippant you are right here the way you've chosen to respond. I will have the integrity to say that I believe the edible products of your business is excellent but the way you treat customers is something that leaves a lot to be desired. Just work on that and you should be okay. Good day. In answer to your revision I will say this: instead of being merely evasive when I asked for a quick apology from my visits in person wherein there was a lack of friendliness, aloofness and rudeness, you said you had nothing to apologize for and the haughty nature of your response was palpable through the screen. I honestly personally can't stand snotty rude people. Food: 5 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1 Like Share Response from the owner 2 hours ago Hi Jana, Would you like to provide more info? Otherwise, I cannot take your review seriously.
