Café d’Avignon

88 Essex St, New York, NY 10002, USA

4.0
They have some of the best pastries, sandwiches, and breakfast sandwiches in Brooklyn. Everything tastes fresh and well made, and the bread is always top-tier. The bacon, egg, and cheese is simple but done really well, with a perfectly cooked egg, smoked bacon, and great bread that makes all the difference. Almost like biting into a cloud. It’s located inside DeKalb Market Hall, right next to Trader Joe’s, which makes it a super convenient stop. It’s a little on the pricey side, but this is NYC, and the quality makes it worth it. My favorite item is their cranberry bread with salted butter and salami sandwich on their crusty Italian bread. Simple, classic, and so good. - Tanesha Jenkins

Café d’Avignon Introduce

In a city that never sleeps and always eats, the quest for the perfect loaf of bread or a flaky, buttery pastry is a serious endeavor for any New Yorker. Café d’Avignon has established itself as a premier destination for those who refuse to settle for anything less than artisanal excellence. Known throughout the boroughs for its commitment to traditional French baking techniques blended with a distinct New York sensibility, this bakery has become a staple for foodies, commuters, and local residents alike. Whether you are looking for a sophisticated mid-day sandwich or a comforting breakfast staple, Café d’Avignon provides a culinary experience that elevates the standard of what a neighborhood bakery can be.

The story of Café d’Avignon is rooted in the art of the "boulangerie." While many establishments rely on automated processes, this bakery prides itself on the tactile nature of baking. The result is a selection of goods that feel intentional and deeply satisfying. From the crisp snap of a baguette’s crust to the delicate, cloud-like layers of their croissants, every item reflects a dedication to high-quality ingredients and patience. For New Yorkers navigating the vibrant but often overwhelming streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn, a stop at this bakery offers more than just sustenance; it provides a moment of genuine quality in a fast-paced world.

Location and Accessibility

Café d’Avignon is prominently located at 88 Essex St, New York, NY 10002, USA. This address places it right in the heart of the historic Essex Market on the Lower East Side. This location is a dream for local users, as it sits within one of the city's most significant culinary hubs. The Lower East Side is famous for its rich food history, and the modern Essex Market continues that legacy by housing some of the best vendors in the city. Being located here means the bakery is easily accessible to those exploring the neighborhood or doing their weekly grocery shopping.

Accessibility is a major highlight for this location. It is conveniently situated near several major subway lines, including the F, M, J, and Z trains at the Delancey St-Essex St station, making it an easy trip from almost anywhere in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Queens. • Top-Tier Bread Quality: The bread is consistently described as the "star of the show," providing the perfect foundation for every sandwich and toast.

What is worth choosing

When you find yourself at the counter of Café d’Avignon, the sheer variety of golden-brown bakes can make it hard to choose. However, there are a few items that have earned legendary status among locals. For breakfast, the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese is an absolute must-try. While it is a simple New York classic, Café d’Avignon elevates it by using smoked bacon and a perfectly cooked egg served on bread that is soft yet resilient—a combination that regulars describe as "done really well."

For those who appreciate a more European-style lunch, the Salami Sandwich on crusty Italian bread is a standout. It is simple and classic, allowing the quality of the meat and the crunch of the bread to take center stage. If you are looking for something unique, the cranberry bread paired with salted butter is a fan favorite that offers a delightful balance of sweet and salty notes. This bread is particularly famous for its texture and flavor depth.

On the beverage side, do not miss out on their Chai. For a customized local favorite, try the unsweetened chai with lactose-free milk and an added shot of espresso for a "dirty chai" that packs a punch without being overly sugary. Whether you are picking up a loaf of their crusty Italian bread to take home or sitting outside with a fresh pastry and a latte, Café d’Avignon delivers a slice of authentic, high-quality New York life that is well worth the visit. Given its location next to major shopping hubs like Trader Joe’s in Brooklyn or the eclectic stalls of Essex Market in Manhattan, it is the perfect place to reward yourself after a day of city exploration.
