Amy's Bread Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the heart of Upper Manhattan, where the historic architecture of Fifth Avenue meets the vibrant energy of East Harlem, lies a culinary oasis for bread lovers and pastry aficionados. Amy’s Bread, a pioneer in New York City’s artisanal baking movement since 1992, has found a sophisticated home within the Museum of the City of New York. Operating as Chalsty’s Café, this location brings the legendary craftsmanship of founder Amy Scherber to one of the city’s most esteemed cultural institutions. It serves not only as a refuel station for museum-goers but as a dedicated neighborhood destination for those who appreciate the "Old World" style of baking—where dough is hand-shaped and ingredients are sourced with meticulous care.
The atmosphere at this specific outpost is distinct from the bustling flagship in Hell’s Kitchen or the industrial charm of Chelsea Market. Located on the second floor of the museum at the top of the grand staircase, the café is situated in the Marble Court. This space is a masterclass in design, featuring a striking black-and-white aesthetic that complements the historic marble of the building. With floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the area with natural light, it offers a serene environment to enjoy a morning croissant or a midday sandwich. For local New Yorkers, it represents the perfect intersection of high art and high-quality "slow food," providing a quiet sanctuary along the "Museum Mile" stretch of 5th Avenue.
Location and Accessibility
Amy’s Bread at Chalsty’s Café is located at 1220 5th Ave, New York, NY 10029, USA. Situated inside the Museum of the City of New York, it occupies a prime position across from the Conservatory Garden of Central Park. This makes it an ideal spot for locals to grab a treat before a park stroll or for students and professionals in the nearby medical and academic corridors to find a high-quality lunch. While it is housed inside the museum, the café is accessible to the public, offering a refined alternative to standard street-level coffee shops in the 10029 area.
Accessibility is excellent via several transit modes. For those using the New York City Subway, the 6 train stops at 103rd Street or 110th Street, both of which are a manageable walk from the museum. For a more direct route, several bus lines including the M1, M2, M3, and M4 run directly along 5th and Madison Avenues, stopping within a block of the entrance. The museum is fully ADA compliant, and the café is easily reached via the grand staircase or the internal elevators. Visitors should note that while the museum's galleries require admission, the café area provides a welcoming public space for those specifically seeking out Amy's world-famous sourdough or a bag of premium coffee beans.

What is worth choosing
When visiting this 5th Avenue gem, the absolute "must-order" is the Semolina with Golden Raisins and Fennel bread. This is the loaf that "put Amy’s Bread on the map" and perfectly encapsulates their style—crusty on the outside with a cornmeal crunch, and aromatic and sweet on the inside. If you are staying for lunch, the Grilled New York State Cheddar on Country Sourdough is highly recommended; the sourdough’s natural tanginess pairs exquisitely with the sharp cheddar and the subtle kick of chipotle pepper puree often included in their signature prep.
For the coffee enthusiast, skipping the standard latte and opting for a drip or espresso drink made with Fonté beans is the way to go. Local fans have noted that these "giant bags of Fonté" are a highlight of the shop, providing a depth of flavor that can "bring you back to life" after a long walk through the museum galleries. If you have a sweet tooth, the Oatmeal Scone with dried fruit is a fan favorite for its substantial texture and just-right sweetness. While wait times can occasionally fluctuate during peak museum hours, the quality of the "phenomenal pastries" and the unparalleled view of Central Park from the Marble Court make every minute spent at Amy’s Bread a quintessential New York experience. Choosing this location means choosing a piece of New York culinary history in one of its most beautiful architectural settings.

Luke warm, tasteless cappuccino and latte that we waited 7 mins to order with 2 people in front of us and 8 mins to make. They weren't drinkable. The apple pie is fine but such disappointment with all that waiting. Sad.

FONTE! The service was great, the pastries are phenomenal - but everything is eclipsed by the awe inspiring site of GIANT BAGS OF FONTE COFFEE BEANS on the shelf. Thank you Chalsty’s Cafe for bringing me back to life ❤️

Great coffee, cookies and single serving focaccia. Nice break at the Museum of the City of New York.

Good cafeteria on the 2nd floor of New York City museum but I would say a bit overpriced although food is quite good. There are coffees, pastries, salads, mini pizzas and sandwiches.
