Grabstein’s Bagels Introduce
In the heart of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, where the morning air is often filled with the aroma of freshly roasted coffee and toasted dough, Grabstein’s Bagels stands as a local fixture for the 10128 community. Located just steps away from the iconic greenery of Central Park and the cultural landmarks of Museum Mile, this bagel shop serves as a quintessential neighborhood stop for those seeking a traditional New York breakfast. For locals, a bagel isn't just a meal—it’s a ritual. Grabstein’s Bagels understands this New York rhythm, offering a straightforward, no-nonsense environment where the focus remains on the variety and quality of the bake. Whether you are a resident heading to the 6 train or a visitor exploring the historic Carnegie Hill district, this shop provides a reliable anchor for your morning routine.
The atmosphere at Grabstein’s is vibrant and reflects the fast-paced energy of the city. As a dedicated "grab-and-go" establishment, it caters perfectly to the New Yorker on the move. While the interior is designed for efficiency rather than lounging, the shop has managed to create a loyal following by offering an extensive selection of bagels and spreads that cater to a wide range of palates. From the classic "everything" bagel to more adventurous varieties, the shop prides itself on maintaining a stocked counter that showcases the diverse textures and flavors the city is famous for. The staff is accustomed to the morning rush, working with a speed and precision that ensures your wait time is minimized, even when the line stretches toward the door during peak weekend hours.
The experience at Grabstein’s Bagels is a study in the New York culinary landscape. In a city where everyone has a strong opinion on their favorite bagel, this shop offers a product that sparks conversation. While many patrons celebrate the "delicious bagels in many varieties" and the "very tasty cream cheese," the shop also experiences the high-stakes critique that comes with the territory of being a Manhattan bagel provider. Like many local institutions, it has its supporters who swear by the freshness of the morning bake and those who have experienced the occasional off-day that can occur in any high-volume kitchen. Regardless of where you fall on the spectrum, the shop remains a bustling hub of activity, proving its status as a significant player in the Upper East Side’s breakfast scene.
Location and Accessibility
Grabstein’s Bagels is ideally situated at 50 E 96th St, New York, NY 10128, USA. This prime location at the intersection of East 96th Street and Madison Avenue places it in one of the most desirable residential pockets of the Upper East Side. The shop is perfectly positioned for those walking to or from Central Park, which is only one block to the west, making it a favorite for weekend picnickers and morning joggers. Its proximity to several major private and public schools also makes it a high-traffic destination for families and students during the weekdays.
From an accessibility standpoint, Grabstein’s is exceptionally well-connected. It is located just a short walk from the 96th Street subway station, providing easy access to the 6 train and the Q train on Second Avenue. This makes it a convenient stop for commuters heading downtown or to the Financial District. For those utilizing surface transit, the M1, M2, M3, and M4 bus lines run frequently along Madison and Fifth Avenues, dropping passengers off within a stone's throw of the shop. What is worth choosing
When you find yourself at Grabstein’s Bagels, the best approach is to lean into the classics that have made New York bagels world-famous. The "everything" bagel paired with their scallion cream cheese is a perennial favorite among the local 10128 residents. The variety of cream cheeses is often cited as a major highlight, so don't be afraid to ask for their most popular seasonal spread. For those who prefer a savory start, the bagel breakfast sandwiches are a substantial option. While the shop has faced some critique regarding the consistency of their hot fillings, many find that a freshly toasted bagel with egg and cheese provides exactly the kind of fuel needed for a day of walking the city streets.
If you aren't in the mood for a bagel, their muffins are a solid alternative and have been noted by customers as a tasty addition to the menu. However, the true "worth choosing" factor at Grabstein’s is the convenience and the variety of the bake itself. Because they offer so many types, it is a great place to pick up a "baker’s dozen" to bring home for a weekend brunch or to the office. Pro tip: given the lack of indoor seating, grab your order and walk the one block west to Central Park. There is no better New York experience than sitting on a park bench near the Reservoir with a fresh Grabstein’s bagel and a hot coffee. This allows you to avoid the cramped feeling of the shop and truly enjoy the flavors of the Upper East Side in the best setting possible.

Delicious bagels in many varieties. Very tasty cream cheese. Bagel breakfast sandwiches. They also have muffins. Unfortunately no seating inside, but there is limited seating outside.

I’ve never had a worst bagel in my life. The bagel itself was crumbly and flaccid. The eggs were flavorless. The sausage flat, the hash brown structure-less. If I wanted to feel something, I’d take a bite out of the garbage on the street corner before coming back here Not to mention, we received a free bonus prize pictured below!

Unfortunately I had a terrible experience here. I came in to pick up two bagels with a friend who ordered a bacon scallion. after I ordered my plain cream cheese because I’m vegetarian. I noticed the staff using the same cutlery to cut the bagels. I only made note after order after assuming cross contamination practice was to be expected. I requested to the cashier that a different knife be used & she says “you should’ve told me that before. It’s already been made.” The lack of consideration & inability to deal with customers left a terrible impression, especially for overpriced bagels.

This is grab-and-go place. No seats are available. I ordered BAE bagel which is white egg, avocado with cream cheese. The bagel wad delicious. The only complaint I had was the waiting place was a bit crowded no space to be relaxed.

I got a bagel to go, got to the park, and when I opened it realized a chunk of hair was baked INTO the bagel. Gross!! Also it was $7.50 for a bagel with lox cream cheese but the lox is blended into the cream cheese so it is minimal lox.
