Bagels On the Square Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In a city where the bagel is more than just breakfast—it is a cultural institution—Bagels On the Square has carved out a dedicated following in the heart of the West Village. Located just off the bustling Father Demo Square, this neighborhood staple represents the quintessential New York City bagel experience. For locals and visitors alike, it serves as a reliable sanctuary for those who appreciate the time-honored tradition of a kettle-boiled and plank-baked bagel. The shop balances a no-frills, efficient energy with a deep commitment to the craftsmanship that defines a "true" New York bagel: a dense, chewy interior protected by a perfectly seasoned, slightly crisp outer shell.
What sets Bagels On the Square apart from the hundreds of other shops across the five boroughs is its impressive variety and its status as a "well-kept secret" among neighborhood residents. While it has earned accolades from major publications like Eater NY, it remains fundamentally a community hub. The interior reflects the fast-paced spirit of Manhattan, designed for efficiency but brimming with the irresistible aroma of garlic, onion, and toasted seeds. Whether you are a commuter catching the train at West Fourth Street or a weekend explorer soaking in the historic charm of Greenwich Village, this bakeshop provides a warm, flavorful welcome to one of the city’s most iconic culinary landscapes.
Location and Accessibility
Bagels On the Square is ideally situated at 7 Carmine Street, New York, NY 10014, USA. Its location is a focal point of the West Village, positioned perfectly for those navigating the winding, picturesque streets of lower Manhattan. The shop sits at the intersection where Carmine Street meets Sixth Avenue, placing it directly across from the historic Father Demo Square. This central location makes it an easy pit stop for anyone heading toward the Hudson River Park or wandering through the nearby shops of SoHo and Greenwich Village.
Accessibility is a major highlight for this establishment. It is located just steps away from the West 4th St - Washington Sq subway station, one of the city's most significant transit hubs serving the A, C, E, B, D, F, and M lines. Additionally, the Christopher St - Sheridan Sq station (1 train) is only a short walk away, making the shop easily reachable from almost any part of the city. For those who prefer the bus, several major routes including the M8, M20, and M55 have stops within a two-block radius. While street parking in the West Village is famously challenging, the high density of public transit options and the shop's pedestrian-friendly storefront make it a seamless "grab-and-go" destination for the thousands of New Yorkers who pass by daily.
Services Offered
The shop operates with the speed and versatility required of a premier Manhattan deli and bakery. Their service model is designed to handle everything from a solo morning coffee run to large-scale office catering. Key services include:
- Daily In-House Baking: Every bagel is handcrafted, kettle-boiled, and baked on wooden planks each day to ensure maximum freshness and authentic texture.
- Extensive Spread Selection: They offer one of the most diverse arrays of cream cheeses in the city, including savory, sweet, and several highly-rated tofu-based (dairy-free) options.
- All-Day Breakfast: Serving a full menu of breakfast sandwiches, including classic bacon, egg, and cheese (BEC) on your choice of bagel, roll, or croissant.
- Gourmet Deli Sandwiches: A wide selection of Boar’s Head meat sandwiches, triple-decker clubs, and specialty heroes like the "Chicken Cheesesteak" or the "Reuben."
- Custom Catering: Professional catering services for local businesses and private events, featuring beautifully arranged bagel platters and sandwich trays.
- Online Ordering and Delivery: Modern convenience through their official website and major delivery platforms, serving a wide radius within lower Manhattan.
- Cafe Beverages: A complete drink menu featuring house blend coffee, iced coffee, herbal teas, and seasonal favorites like hot apple cider.
Features / Highlights
Bagels On the Square is defined by several standout features that contribute to its longevity in the competitive New York food scene. These highlights include:
- Iconic "Everything" Seasoning: Known for a generous and garlicky everything bagel that provides a robust flavor profile favored by savory-breakfast enthusiasts.
- Tofu Cream Cheese Variety: A significant highlight for the dairy-free community, offering multiple flavored tofu spreads that maintain the rich consistency of traditional schmear.
- Efficient Service: Despite the long lines that often form during weekend brunch hours, the staff is renowned for their speed, moving customers through the ordering process with quintessential New York efficiency.
- Seasonal Specials: The shop frequently introduces festive items, such as pumpkin-flavored bagels in the autumn or green-themed bagels for St. Patrick’s Day.
- Traditional Craftsmanship: Their adherence to the kettle-boiling method ensures a bagel that avoids the "bready" or "roll-like" texture found in lesser shops.
- Outdoor Proximity: Its location next to Father Demo Square allows patrons to enjoy their hot bagels on a park bench, providing one of the best "people-watching" breakfast spots in the city.

What is worth choosing
When faced with the expansive menu at Bagels On the Square, the "Everything Bagel" is the undisputed heavyweight champion. Customers frequently rave about its soft yet chewy texture and the savory, garlicky punch of the seasoning. To take it to the next level, pairing it with their high-quality lox spread is highly recommended; the lox is noted for being exceptionally savory and fresh, providing a perfect salty balance to the dense dough. For those looking for a more substantial meal, the "Brooklyn Hipster" (lox, scallion cream cheese, cucumber, onions, and capers) offers a sophisticated, open-faced explosion of classic New York flavors.
If you prefer a sweeter start to your morning, the French Toast bagel is a standout favorite, often paired with butter or a light cream cheese to let the cinnamon and maple notes shine. For the dairy-free crowd, the scallion tofu cream cheese is a revelation, providing the same tang and texture as its dairy counterpart. Finally, don't overlook their breakfast burritos or the "BOTS" sandwich—a hearty creation featuring bacon scallion cream cheese, pastrami, and a fried egg. Regardless of your choice, the best way to enjoy a Carmine Street morning is to ask the staff which bins just came out of the oven; a hot, fresh-from-the-kettle bagel here is a simple pleasure that hits the spot every single time.

The bagels from this restaurant are amazing! Everything bagel with cream cheese or tofu cheese is our favourite. There is very limited seating here so we love to go to the park across the street and have the bagel.

Quick, fast, and reliable. This place may sometimes have a line but it’s goes quick. They have some of the biggest bagels in Manhattan and I love it. The bacon, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel add ketchup is the move! There’s also a ton of muffins and even some cookies. Perfect for a quick breakfast on the go.
