Molly's Cupcakes Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Nestled in the charming, storied corridors of Manhattan’s West Village, Molly’s Cupcakes has established itself as a must-visit destination for anyone with a sweet tooth and a penchant for nostalgia. Since its arrival on Bleecker Street, this bakery has captivated New Yorkers not just with its sugar-dusted window displays, but with a unique "center-filled" philosophy that elevates the humble cupcake into a gourmet experience. The bakery’s name is a heartfelt tribute to Molly, the founder’s third-grade teacher who would bake cupcakes for her students' birthdays. This spirit of childhood wonder and community generosity remains at the core of the business today, making it a beloved fixture in the local neighborhood fabric.
Stepping into Molly’s Cupcakes is like taking a delightful trip back to an elementary school classroom, but with a much better menu. The interior is famously outfitted with swing seats at the counter, shelves lined with books, and an array of board games that encourage patrons to linger and enjoy the "cozy vibe." It is a rare space in the fast-paced West Village that invites you to slow down, pick out a game, and indulge in a treat that is handcrafted from scratch. Whether you are a local resident looking for a quiet afternoon nook or a visitor exploring the Village's culinary highlights, Molly’s provides a whimsical backdrop for some of the city’s most celebrated desserts.
Location and Accessibility
Molly’s Cupcakes is situated at 228 Bleecker St, New York, NY 10014, USA, positioned between Carmine Street and 6th Avenue. This prime location in the West Village puts it right in the heart of one of New York’s most walkable and picturesque districts. The shop is easily identifiable by its bright, welcoming signage and often a line of eager patrons that speaks to its enduring popularity. Being surrounded by historic brownstones and legendary jazz clubs, it serves as the perfect post-dinner stop for those dining in the nearby Greenwich Village area.
For those navigating the city via public transit, the bakery is exceptionally accessible. It is just a short three-minute walk from the West 4th St-Washington Sq station, which serves the A, C, E, B, D, F, and M subway lines. Additionally, the Christopher St-Sheridan Sq station (1 train) is only a few blocks away. For users with mobility considerations, the entrance is mostly flat with a very slight incline, making it accessible for most. The shop offers ample indoor seating, though the popular swing seats at the espresso bar are often the first to be claimed during peak weekend hours.

What is worth choosing
When you find yourself at the counter of Molly’s Cupcakes, the "Center-Filled" menu is where the true magic happens. The Creme Brulee cupcake is a perennial favorite; it features a classic vanilla cake filled with rich creme brulee custard, topped with a caramelized sugar crust that provides a satisfying crackle with every bite. If you prefer something inspired by childhood favorites, the Cake Batter cupcake—a vanilla confetti cake filled with raw cake batter and topped with rainbow sprinkles—is a top-tier choice that consistently receives rave reviews for its moist texture.
For fans of more complex flavor profiles, the Ron Bennington (chocolate cake with peanut butter filling and chocolate ganache) is a bold choice, though some local regulars suggest confirming the day's butterscotch topping for the full intended experience. If you are celebrating a larger event, their Red Velvet Cake is highly sought after for its super delicious flavor, though you might consider requesting a specific cake-to-frosting balance if you prefer more sponge than cream cheese frosting. At roughly $4.81 per gourmet cupcake, it is a premium treat that delivers a unique "New York" experience. Don't forget to grab a board game and a swing at the bar to get the full Molly’s experience—it is the perfect way to spend a rainy Manhattan afternoon.

On a whim I stopped into Molly’s Cupcakes. I ordered a Ron Bennington (chocolate cake with peanut butter filling) and a Creme Brulee. The Ron Bennington was disappointing, the chocolate cake was plain and the peanut butter filling was literally plain peanut butter out the jar… it was also supposed to have crushed butterscotch topping on the ganache but mine came without. I didn’t notice this until I got home since I got it to go. The Creme Brulee was good, there were parts of the top that went past ‘caramelized’ into ‘burned’ territory and tasted bitter. But the rest was good. Neither cake is too sweet, which I like. The inside has a cozy vibe, there are books to read and board games if that’s your thing. Lots of seating, ala elementary, probably a nod to the origin story I read on their website (Molly was the owner’s teacher who would bake for the class). I can see this being a 4 star place with some improvements but I’m not feeling it right now, especially at $4.81 per cupcake. Strong *maybe* for the Creme Brulee, definitely not for the Ron Bennington (I also got a Cake Batter for someone else but I can’t speak on that taste wise but it seemed pretty plain/straightforward presentation wise). Idk if I’ll be back.

Ordered a red velvet cake to celebrate my mom’s birthday and it was super delicious! The only complaint I have though is that the cake to frosting ratio wasn’t too great. It was way too much cream cheese frosting in the center. If they had reduced it a bit it would’ve been perfect!

The “cupcakes” are disgusting. They are pure cheap sugar, cheap margarine and very little fruit. I would advise anyone with a little bit of love for themselves and their own health to stay away from this place. The coffee is crap but that doesn’t matter since you are already plainer by the hydrogenated fats on the creams. Also the service is messy and not all the staff is “welcoming”

Love this place! It was a stop on our food tour and the cupcakes were awesome! I grabbed a huge sugar cookie to go! I loved the butterscotch caramel and chocolate caramel. So much so that the following night, we got on the subway for 15 minutes each way to go back for more!!! Crazy!

Good. I may have made a cupcake choice that just died not connecting- peach cobbler cupcake. It was more quick bread, like a banana or zucchini bread, but sweet like a cupcake. Expected a more light and cakey experience. The peach experience was subtle - too subtle for the name and the spices were the same ... not at the expected level. My friend got a Samaos cupcake. She enjoyed it. Worth a visit, but may not hit the mark with everyone.
