Criollas Empanadas Introduce
In the competitive culinary landscape of Manhattan, where quick-service options are plenty, Criollas Empanadas stands out as a specialized bakery bringing the soulful flavors of Argentina to the streets of New York. Located in the heart of the West Village, this establishment focuses on a singular craft: the perfect baked empanada. Unlike many Latin American eateries that favor the deep fryer, Criollas prides itself on the traditional "baked, never fried" method. This technique results in a lighter, flakier crust that allows the high-quality, often locally sourced ingredients to take center stage, offering a healthier yet deeply satisfying alternative to standard city street food.
The vibe at Criollas Empanadas is a blend of cozy neighborhood charm and authentic South American flair. For New Yorkers, it serves as a reliable sanctuary for a quick lunch or a savory snack while navigating the busy thoroughfares of the West Village. The shop’s philosophy is rooted in a "timeless recipe born in the streets of Buenos Aires," which has been adapted for the modern, health-conscious New York palate. With a menu that thoughtfully includes vegan and vegetarian options, the bakery has become a inclusive destination where everyone—from meat lovers to plant-based diners—can find a handcrafted pocket of comfort. The friendly service, often punctuated by a warm "hola" and traditional Argentine music, makes every visit feel less like a transaction and more like a brief trip to a Patagonian kitchen.
Location and Accessibility
Criollas Empanadas is perfectly situated at 333 6th Ave, New York, NY 10014, USA. This prime West Village location on the corner of 6th Avenue makes it exceptionally accessible for locals and visitors alike. It is just a short stroll from the scenic Hudson River Park, making it a popular stop for those looking to grab a portable meal before a waterfront walk or a sunset picnic at the pier.
For those utilizing the New York City subway system, accessibility is one of the shop's greatest assets. It is located mere steps from the West 4th St - Washington Sq station, a major transit hub serviced by the A, C, E, B, D, F, and M trains. Additionally, the 1 train at Christopher St - Sheridan Sq is only a few blocks away. For those traveling by bus, the M8 and M55 lines provide convenient drops nearby. The shop’s street-level entrance and efficient layout cater to the fast-paced energy of the area, though there are often small tables or nearby benches where you can pause to enjoy your empanada while it’s still piping hot from the oven.

- Artisan Sweet Treats: Their selection of Alfajores—traditional cookies filled with Dulce de Leche—is often cited by locals as some of the best in the city.
- Transparent Ingredients: Each empanada is uniquely stamped or folded so that customers can easily identify their flavors, making group orders simple and organized.
- Cultural Atmosphere: From the music to the occasional free empanada flyers for returning customers, the shop fosters a loyal community vibe.

What is Worth Choosing
If you are visiting Criollas for the first time, the **Argentine Malbec Beef Empanada** is the undisputed signature choice. This "best seller" features juicy grass-fed beef slow-cooked with Malbec wine, green olives, and caramelized onions, offering a rich and savory depth that is rare for a quick-service snack. For those who prefer a classic, the **Ham and Cheese Empanada** is a local favorite, utilizing a creamy mozzarella base enhanced with a touch of nutmeg sauce that creates a smooth, oozing texture.
Vegetarians should not miss the **Spinach Asiago**, which combines fresh greens with the sharp, salty bite of Asiago cheese. For a vegan option, the **Creamy Corn** empanada—stuffed with sweet corn cream, peppers, and onions—provides a surprising and satisfying sweetness. No visit is complete without a side of their house-made **Chimichurri** sauce, which adds a bright, herbaceous kick to any of the savory pockets. Finally, for dessert, the **Alfajor Coco** is highly recommended; it is a gluten-free cookie stuffed with rich Dulce de Leche and rolled in coconut flakes, providing a perfect, sweet end to an authentic Argentine meal.

There are vegan options and vegetarian options. I love it! Are amazing and totally worth the price! My favorite is the ham and cheese one. I love that they’re baked instead of fried—it makes them so much healthier!

I went to a place where an Argentine girl helped me. She explained the different empanada flavors and gave me a flyer for a free empanada if I come back to buy more. She was very kind… I also bought a delicious dulce de leche without a doubt, I’ll be back!

What an addition - open 5ish months, best ever brisket empanada and great friendly atmosphere. Fun merch for any empanada lover (just a couple little good things). Great quick lunch!!

Got 2 empanadas, the creamy corn and beef. Both were flavorful and delicious. If I had to choose, I would say the corn was better. It was served warm and was the perfect snack to eat on the go.

I had two two empanadas that were delicious! They were tasty (both chicken) but also soft with just the amount of crunch on the crust. Will absolutely be coming again.
