Modern Bread and Bagel Introduce
In the culinary capital of the world, finding a bagel that captures the elusive "crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside" texture is a rite of passage for any New Yorker. For those living with Celiac disease or gluten sensitivities, this quest was historically met with disappointment—until the arrival of Modern Bread and Bagel. Located at 139 W 14th St, this establishment has revolutionized the gluten-free landscape of Manhattan. It is not merely a "substitute" shop; it is a premier bakery that attracts gluten-eaters and wheat-avoiders alike. By utilizing a proprietary blend of ancient grains and traditional kettle-boiling methods, they have managed to create a product that competes directly with the city's most legendary traditional bagel shops. For locals in the Chelsea and Greenwich Village regions, this spot serves as a vibrant hub for daily breakfast, satisfying lunches, and indulgent treats that are safe for everyone.
The philosophy of Modern Bread and Bagel, founded by Orly Gottesman, is rooted in the belief that dietary restrictions should never mean a compromise on taste or social experience. The bakery operates as a 100% dedicated gluten-free, nut-free, and Kosher-certified facility, removing the anxiety of cross-contamination that often plagues the dining experiences of the Celiac community. Beyond the technical safety of the food, the bakery is known for its warm, inclusive atmosphere. Staff members are frequently praised for their patience and deep knowledge of the menu, often going the extra mile to help newcomers understand the diverse offerings. Whether you are a regular who is greeted by name or a first-time visitor discovering that "gluten-free" can actually be delicious, the experience at this 14th Street gem is designed to make every customer feel seen and satisfied.
Location and Accessibility
Modern Bread and Bagel is strategically located at 139 W 14th St, New York, NY 10011, USA. Situated on the bustling 14th Street corridor between 6th and 7th Avenues, the bakery sits at the energetic intersection of Chelsea and the West Village. This central location makes it an ideal stop for residents, students from nearby The New School or NYU, and professionals working in the surrounding commercial districts. Its presence in this high-traffic area ensures that a safe, high-quality meal is always within reach for those navigating the lower-middle section of Manhattan.
Accessibility is one of the location's strongest features. New York transit users will find the bakery exceptionally easy to reach, as it is situated almost directly next to the 14th Street subway complex, which services the 1, 2, 3, F, M, and L trains, as well as the PATH train to New Jersey. This makes it a convenient "pit stop" for commuters coming from Brooklyn, Upper Manhattan, or across the Hudson. The storefront is street-level and features indoor seating with booths and tables, providing a comfortable urban oasis. For those on a tight schedule, the shop is optimized for quick pick-ups, and its proximity to Union Square means it is also perfectly positioned for those enjoying a stroll through one of the city's most iconic public spaces.

What is worth choosing
When visiting the 14th Street location, the absolute "must-try" is the classic Bagel with Cream Cheese. For someone who hasn't had a "real" bagel in years, the texture of their everything or garlic bagels is a revelation. If you are looking for something more substantial, the "G'Day Mate" breakfast sandwich—featuring a fried egg, avocado, and harissa aioli—is a fan favorite that perfectly balances creamy, spicy, and savory notes. For those who prefer an open-faced option, the Egg and Avocado bagel provides a fresh, lighter take on the New York breakfast classic that doesn't skimp on flavor.
In addition to the savory menu, the bakery's "Sweet Stuff" is legendary. The glazed donuts are often cited as the best gluten-free donuts in the city, with a fluffy, yeast-raised consistency that avoids the dense "cakey" feel of most GF alternatives. The Chocolate Babka and Cinnamon Buns are also highly worth choosing, particularly for those who miss the rich, yeasty pastries of traditional European-style bakeries. If you are a fan of bold flavors, don't overlook the Jalapeño Cheddar Cream Cheese, which pairs excellently with their savory bagels. No matter what you choose, make sure to grab a cup of their signature coffee; it is the perfect companion to a warm, fresh-baked roll. Whether you're stopping by "rain or shine," Modern Bread and Bagel offers a culinary experience that truly lives up to its reputation as a hidden gem in the heart of Chelsea. I want to shout out Dylan! She was our “server” she helped me and my cousin with the best picks, never made us feel stupid, helped us understand the menu and was very patient with us. She also knew every regular that walked in and made everyone feel seen. On our first trip to NY this was definitely our favorite stop and we made sure to go back rain or shine on our trip. Their coffee was great it was cute and as a celiac I’ve never had a place quite like this. Now I need a location in Chicago!!

My husband was worried about being able to find gluten free options in the states as not many places marked as coeliac friendly/safe. This amazing place had everything fully gluten free and had some fantastic options for fillings. My husband had the jalapeño cream cheese, and he enjoyed the food so much we went back the next day so he could try something else. I had egg and avocado open faced bagel. Highly recommend this hidden Gem. Can’t even tell it’s gluten free! He recommends their doughnuts too. Staff so friendly and patient.

Incredible place to stop in for the BEST gf/df bagels in NYC. The staff are so friendly! Brooke too care of us and was accommodating when it came to our allergies, and they have so many amazing options! On top of that they feature Kosher Vegan meat options that add a perfect variation to any breakfast sandwich. Not to mention the great sweet treats! From donuts, to cookies, to pastries and more… they have it all!! Would 100% return here on my next visit to NYC!

Modern Bagel is a Mecca for gluten free folks! NYC is known for its bagels, however finding a dedicated gluten free bakery can be a challenge - enter Modern Bagel. Their bagel flavor selections + bakery items are plentiful, and the egg sandwiches they create using their bagels are delicious! I got the G’Day mate on an everything bagel and it was everything I remember in a bagel before I was gluten free. I loved it so much that I came back for a second time during my short trip to NYC. I came with a friend who does not have dietary restrictions, and they also thought very highly of the food. The seating inside is limited, however this location is a short walk from Washington Square Park, which is a perfect spot to enjoy a NYC gluten free bagel. I will absolutely come back during my next trip!

I can eat gluten but it’s still one of the best bagels I’ve had. My sister is celiac and Modern Bread & Bagel has quickly become a favourite - so many great, safe options for her. The team at the Chelsea store are so lovely and friendly - highly recommend 🥯
