Manna House Introduce
In the ever-shifting landscape of Lower Manhattan, where glass towers often rise beside centuries-old tenements, few places offer the grounded, sensory continuity of Manna House. Located at 125 Mott Street, this bakery is far more than just a place to grab a quick bite; it is a vital repository of Cantonese culinary tradition in the heart of New York City’s Chinatown. For decades, Manna House has served as a reliable anchor for the local community, attracting everyone from long-time residents to curious foodies seeking the authentic taste of a neighborhood that has defined the immigrant experience in America. As you step inside, the aromatic blend of roasted pork, sweet custard, and freshly steamed dough provides an immediate welcome, signaling that you have found one of the most genuine food experiences in the 10013 zip code.
Manna House is an establishment built on consistency and heritage. In a city where food trends cycle through at breakneck speed, this bakery has chosen a different path—one of unwavering quality and traditional techniques. It is widely recognized by locals as a premier destination for those who appreciate the nuances of Cantonese baking, where the balance of sweet and savory is treated with scientific precision. The atmosphere is quintessential Chinatown: bustling, efficient, and unpretentious. Here, the focus remains entirely on the tray currently emerging from the oven. For those who grew up in the neighborhood, Manna House is a taste of childhood; for newcomers, it is a masterclass in the simple brilliance of well-executed street food.
Location and Accessibility
Manna House is perfectly positioned at 125 Mott St, New York, NY 10013, USA. Mott Street is historically the "Main Street" of Chinatown, and the bakery sits between Grand Street and Hester Street, placing it in the most vibrant part of the district. This location is an ideal starting point or midpoint for anyone exploring the rich cultural corridor of Lower Manhattan. Whether you are walking through the nearby Elizabeth Street Garden or shopping at the local markets on Canal Street, Manna House is just a short, pleasant stroll away.
Public transportation access is one of the many reasons Manna House remains so popular with commuters. The bakery is within easy walking distance of the Canal Street subway hub, which provides access to the 6, N, Q, R, W, J, and Z lines. Additionally, the Grand Street station (B and D trains) is just a few blocks away, making it a convenient stop for those heading toward Brooklyn or the Upper West Side. For bus travelers, the M103 and M15 lines run frequently nearby. While the street-level entrance is easy to find, visitors should keep in mind that Mott Street is a busy pedestrian area where street parking is extremely limited. The most authentic way to visit is on foot, joining the flow of locals who move through these streets with purpose and a clear destination in mind.
Services Offered
Manna House operates with the efficiency and speed typical of the best Cantonese bakeries, ensuring that their high volume of daily customers is served with fresh products. Their core services are designed for the busy New Yorker on the go:
- Daily Fresh Baking: Trays of buns, tarts, and cakes are pulled from the oven throughout the day, ensuring that "fresh" is not just a slogan but a reality.
- Individual Item Packaging: To maintain hygiene and convenience, items are often individually wrapped, making them perfect for clean, portable snacking or taking home.
- Efficient Counter Service: The staff is seasoned and quick, typically getting customers in and out within 2-3 minutes even during peak morning or afternoon hours.
- Specialty Cake Orders: While famous for their individual buns, they also offer larger cakes for birthdays and local celebrations, often featuring traditional fruit and sponge layers.
- Volume Sales: It is common for patrons to "stock up," and the bakery is well-prepared to provide large quantities of buns for those looking to freeze and save them for later.
Features / Highlights
What defines Manna House and keeps generations of New Yorkers returning is a specific set of characteristics that are hard to replicate. The highlights of a visit here include:
- Legendary Freshness: Unlike many mass-produced options, the items here are noted for their superior textures, particularly the soft, chewy bread of the steamed and baked buns.
- Authentic Flavor Profiles: The BBQ pork (Cha Siu) filling is celebrated for its rich flavor and the inclusion of savory onions, avoiding the overly sweet or processed taste found elsewhere.
- Exceptional Value: Despite its popularity, Manna House remains one of the most affordable "cheap eats" in Manhattan, with most pastries costing around a few dollars.
- Clean and Professional Space: The shop maintains a clean and orderly environment, providing a professional backdrop for their traditional craft.
- Cash-Only Tradition: In keeping with the historic practices of the neighborhood, Manna House is primarily a cash-only establishment, ensuring fast transactions and lower prices.
- Consistency Across Decades: Customers who have frequented the bakery since the early 2000s report that the quality of their favorite items remains unchanged.

What is Worth Choosing
If you are standing at the counter of Manna House for the first time, your first priority should be the Pork Buns. Local heritage New Yorkers frequently cite these as the "best in Chinatown." Whether you choose the baked or steamed version, you are greeted with a soft, chewy dough that encases a generous portion of BBQ pork with a savory onion kick. These buns are so popular that regulars often buy out the remaining stock on a tray, and they have the unique quality of remaining "amazing" even the next day if toasted at home.
The second essential choice is the Egg Tart (Dan Tat). Manna House has built a multi-decade reputation on these tarts. They are characterized by a crust that is impressively thin and crunchy, supporting a silky, egg-rich custard center that isn't overly sweet. Whether you prefer the cookie-style crust or the flaky variety, the consistency of the bake here is unmatched. Finally, don't overlook the Sponge Cakes—light, fluffy, and perfect for a mid-afternoon tea. For a truly local experience, pair your pastry with a hot coffee or milk tea; the service is so quick you'll be back on Mott Street with a warm bag of treats in hand before you know it. Would you like me to help you find the best time to visit to catch the freshest batch of egg tarts?

As a Chinese heritage New Yorker since 2000: Hands down the best pork bun I’ve had in Chinatown. FRESH! Great BBQ flavor and yummy onions. Soft chewy bread. So good I bought all that was left! All their items individually wrapped. Nice staff, clean space too. PS- saved one for next day and … still amazing toasted!

The best egg tart. Grew up eating them from Manna and after all these years the quality is still the same. Service is quick like all other Cantonese bakeries, usually in and out of the store in 2-3 minutes. I always pay cash. All three of their stores have the same quality egg tarts, definitely worth a try!

Warm egg tart with very thin and crispy cake crust. I usually prefer layered flaky crust but this is impressively crunchy and delicious. Highly recommend 👍

Very good, 4/5 stars. When I came in, one of the people behind the counter understood and spoke very good English. The sponge cakes are pretty good! The milk tea definitely more milky, but it's still pretty good. There's a lot of bun in the hot dog bun; I've had better, but this one wasn't terrible. There is a counter at the back if you want to sit in and eat.

Their spongecake is delivered to the Oriental Market in Pittsburgh. I absolutely love it. It’s very light and fluffy. It’s not too sweet and has a little layer of butter in the middle.
