On Christmas Eve during the day, Ken and I chose to indulge our senses by tasting a variety of food from different places. We had gingerbread cookies at the Museum of the City of New York, individual portions of Eileen’s cheesecake and now we chose Chinese red and green buns. Chiu Hong bakery has tables and chairs. Chiu Hong Bakery is an old time Cantonese bakery in Chinatown, one of the last of its kind. It's a low-key, no-frills community shop, a Chinatown OG that's been in the area for over four decades. It's filled with the local elderly crowd who like to read the newspaper over a cup of tea or chat with their friends. Here you can buy a bunch of buns and mochi balls for only $1.50 each. The prices at this old school bakery are considerably low. They sell perhaps the best mochi balls in NYC! You can choose between red bean or peanut mochi balls, two for $1.50. They’re soft, gooey, chewy, fresh, and not too sweet. Sounds kind of funny, but it always feels really nice to sink my teeth into them. I really like the texture in the peanut mochi balls because the peanuts inside are crunchy with sugar, the outer layer has shredded coconut, and the mochi part is very soft, chewy, and stretchy - so it's like a whole medley of textures. Quick update: October, 2025. I just came back here and am surprised how good the coffee is. Same as last time, but it's making me so extra happy I have to mention it 💞 Scruffy bakery. Instantly found the cake a friend asked me bring, since everything is clearly labeled in English and Chinese. Wheelchair accessible! Tables with chairs. Cash only. Locals buy here. Amazingly good coffee. Had no expectations for the walnut cookie, was pleasantly surprised. I scraped the crumbs and ate them, so good. Lovely.

Chiu Hong is likely one of the oldest Cantonese bakeries in Chinatown, and the last of its kind. The interior is old-school, with worn-out furnishings and that no-frills, local charm you don’t see much anymore. You know it’s the real deal when most of the customers are Chinese elderly. The moment we walked in, we heard the familiar sound of the classic TVB news intro. It instantly brought back our childhood memories lol iykyk. They offer a variety of traditional Cantonese pastries, like almond cookies (杏仁餅), fortune cakes (發糕), red bean paste pastries (紅豆酥), and more. But they’re best known for their peanut and red bean mochi, which costs just $1.50 for two. *Coconut Tart I had a sudden craving for a coconut tart (椰撻), even though I grew up favoring egg tarts. The tart is crumbly and buttery, while the filling is slightly chewy, similar to the sweet coconut filling of a cocktail bun (雞尾包). It’s always topped with a canned cherry, which gives it that iconic look, even if the taste is artificial lol. If you have never had coconut tarts, I’d recommend the one from Chiu Hong as it tastes very authentic.

1.1.18 - their fried sesame balls with redbean fikking are darn good! There's always a rabblenofbold folk in here, which adds to the charm. Coffee is meh, a little water down, unfortunately.
