On Christmas Eve during the day, Ken and I chose to indulge our senses by tasting a variety of food from different places. We had gingerbread cookies at the Museum of the City of New York, individual portions of Eileen’s cheesecake and now we chose Chinese red and green buns. Chiu Hong bakery has tables and chairs. Chiu Hong Bakery Introduce

In the rapidly evolving landscape of Lower Manhattan, where high-concept bistros and modern glass towers often dominate the skyline, there exists a sanctuary of tradition that has remained virtually unchanged for over four decades. Chiu Hong Bakery, located at 161 Mott St, is more than just a place to grab a quick bite; it is a "Chinatown OG" and one of the last remaining authentic Cantonese bakeries of its kind in New York City. For locals and visitors alike, a visit to this establishment is a sensory journey into the heart of the neighborhood's history, offering a low-key, no-frills environment that prioritizes community, affordability, and time-honored recipes.

Walking into Chiu Hong Bakery feels like stepping into a living time capsule. The atmosphere is quiet and unpretentious, defined by worn furnishings and the gentle hum of conversation from the local elderly crowd. Unlike many modern bakeries that emphasize a "grab-and-go" culture, Chiu Hong provides tables and chairs, encouraging patrons to linger over a newspaper or catch up with neighbors over a steaming cup of tea. It is a space where the frantic pace of New York City slows down, allowing for a moment of genuine human connection. Whether you are stopping by on a quiet weekday morning or joining the locals for a festive treat on a holiday like Christmas Eve, the warm hospitality and nostalgic charm of Chiu Hong make it an essential pillar of the Chinatown community.

Location and Accessibility are primary highlights for those navigating the city. Situated at 161 Mott St, New York, NY 10013, the bakery is nestled in a prime section of Chinatown, just south of Broome Street and within easy walking distance of Little Italy. This central location makes it highly accessible via multiple subway lines. The Grand St station (B, D trains) is just a few blocks away, while the Canal St station complex (J, N, Q, R, W, Z, 6 trains) provides a short, scenic walk through the heart of the district. For those exploring the boutiques of SoHo or the historic streets of the Lower East Side, Chiu Hong Bakery serves as a perfect, budget-friendly anchor for a day of urban exploration. Please note that this is a strictly cash-only establishment, a hallmark of many of the area’s most authentic "old-school" gems.

Services Offered:

  • Traditional Cantonese Baking: A daily selection of handmade buns, tarts, and specialty pastries prepared using generations-old techniques.
  • Café Seating: Ample space for customers to sit and enjoy their food on-site, a rarity among many small Chinatown bakeries.
  • Bulk Ordering: Ability to purchase large quantities of buns and mochi for family gatherings, community events, or holiday celebrations.
  • Traditional Beverage Service: Classic offerings including hot milk tea, coffee, and a variety of fragrant Chinese teas.
  • Seasonal Specials: Unique menu items available during traditional holidays, such as mooncakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival or specialty buns for Christmas.

Features and Highlights:

  • Unrivaled Value: Known for maintaining incredible price points, with many signature items available for approximately $1.50, defying the inflationary trends of the city.
  • Community Gathering Hub: A vital social space for neighborhood regulars, particularly the elderly population, fostering a sense of belonging and cultural preservation.

What is worth choosing at Chiu Hong Bakery? If you are a first-time visitor, your order should unquestionably begin with their legendary Mochi Balls. At a price of just $1.50 for two, these are a masterclass in texture. You can choose between red bean or peanut fillings; the peanut mochi is particularly celebrated for its "medley of textures," featuring a soft, stretchy outer layer coated in shredded coconut and a crunchy, sugar-sweetened peanut center. They are famously gooey and fresh, providing a satisfying "chew" that local regulars swear by.

Beyond the mochi, the bakery’s selection of traditional buns and tarts offers exceptional quality at an unbeatable price. The Coconut Bun and Coconut Tart are favorites for those who enjoy a subtle, tropical sweetness that isn't cloying. For fans of classic Cantonese dim sum, the Egg Tart at Chiu Hong is a must-try—boasting a flaky, buttery crust and a silky custard center. Pair your selection with a classic Hong Kong-style milk tea for a complete "tea time" experience that costs less than a single latte at most Midtown cafes. If you happen to visit during a holiday, look for their "red and green" festive buns, which offer a colorful and delicious way to celebrate the season with a local Chinatown twist. Whether you are there for a 75-cent cookie or a full tray of savory buns, Chiu Hong Bakery delivers a level of satisfaction that only a true New York legend can provide.
